A revolutionary and personalized skincare shopping experience on Singapore's Orchard Road, leveraging cutting-edge technology to create an interactive and engaging environment.

The Future X "Art of You" Smart Store was SK-II's bet on what retail could become. Built on Singapore's Orchard Road with Huge Inc, the pop-up store used AI, facial recognition, and interactive art to create a skincare shopping experience where the technology responded to each visitor individually — not as a gimmick, but as the operating logic of the entire space.

This was 2018-2019. Facial recognition in retail was still genuinely novel. The question was not whether the technology existed, but whether it could work reliably at scale, in public, with real consumers who had no instruction manual and no patience for loading screens.

The Art of You — Exterior Installation

The storefront itself was the first interaction. Developed with Rare Volume, an interactive digital wall used advanced facial recognition and emotion-sensing technology to read visitors' expressions, head movements, eye movements, and mouth movements in real time. The system translated those inputs into dynamic color schemes and generative art pieces — unique to each person, generated live, and shareable.

It served two functions simultaneously: a welcome experience that made every visitor feel individually recognized, and a visual spectacle that drew foot traffic on one of Asia's busiest shopping streets.

Advanced Skin Analysis

Inside, SK-II's Magic Ring skin analysis was reinvented using remote facial recognition, AI, and computer vision. Guests sat in individual booths and activated the system with a smart bracelet. The analysis assessed radiance, wrinkle-resistance, and smoothness, then displayed results on an interactive skincare wall.

The design intent was specificity. Rather than a generic "your skin is good" readout, each visitor received a data-driven profile that connected directly to product recommendations downstream. The technology was the bridge between a customer's actual skin condition and the product that addressed it.

Smart Beauty Bar

The product discovery zone was data-driven and self-paced. A responsive digital interface presented tailored product exploration based on each visitor's skin analysis results. The environment was deliberately non-pressurizing — no sales associate hovering, no timed interaction. Visitors could learn about SK-II products at their own speed, guided by their own data.

The store was built with collaborators including Jessica Shaw, Dave Fink, Dave Sanderson, Rare Volume, Lightswitch, Ptarmigan, Creative Technology APAC, and Kingsmen Production. It generated coverage in the Straits Times, Weekender Singapore, and The Honey Combers.

As an early bet on intelligent retail, the Future X Smart Store proved that the technology could hold in a live consumer environment — not as a prototype behind glass, but as a functioning store on a major shopping street where the door was open and anyone could walk in.
